Children who are learning to read are often hesitant about their reading abilities. Many kids feel more at ease reading to pets, who are simply there to listen—not to judge how well they are reading.
Reading to pets is an amazing way to get your child excited about reading during the summer! Pets are loving, nonjudgmental listeners that can help your child feel more comfortable while practicing reading. Studies have shown that children who read to dogs achieve higher end-of-year reading scores (Kirnan, Siminerio, & Wong, 2016).
Keeping readers engaged during the summer months is important, and pets can make summer reading exciting. While at-home schooling has reduced and many children will be returning to classrooms in fall 2021, We Are All Ears can still support reading skills and education! Keeping kids reading during the summer will help support their overall learning, and reading to pets makes reading easy and fun for them. We hope you’ll join our summer reading challenge and continue reading to pets at home. Take the pledge and get reading!
Take the pledge today to participate in our program! Our goal is to have thousands of readers and pets all across the country and the world teaming up to read!
